A Look Into Google's New Game Streaming Service "Stadia"

The idea is that gamers around the world will no longer have to buy a console or high-end computer to enjoy their favourite games anymore. On top of that, Google has promised to do away with downloads and installation all together.

Imagine this: you’re watching your favourite YouTuber play a game on YouTube. With Stadia, you would be able to click a link and immediately begin playing that same game as well, with no patches. If the YouTuber was live streaming, you could also request to play with them using the “Crowd Play” feature that would be accessible right from YouTube. The goal of the Crowd Play feature is to connect creators with their viewers far past the abilities of the comment section.

Google boasts that Stadia is “the Netflix of gaming” and that seems to sum up the concept the best way. Much like how you never actually download media on Netflix, Stadia would stream games to your device of choice. (So far Stadia has been confirmed to be launching on desktops, laptops, tablets, TVs, and phones. No word yet if it will work on Samsung Smart Refrigerators, but one can hope.) Stadia will run in up to 4K HD and (rather ambitiously) 60 FPS. 60 is the proposed number for the standard frame rate.

The Stadia controller looks fairly basic, but comes with a few new features.

Not only will Google release the streaming service for about 20 dollars a month, but they are also releasing a compatible controller.(The price of the controller has not yet been released). The controller seems pretty standard to me, with the addition of two important buttons. The first is a “capture button”, which, once pressed would allow the player to instantly share their gameplay on YouTube. The second is a Google Assistant button, which you could press and then dictate what you want searched directly to your controller. This would be especially helpful to pull up walkthrough videos to assist in gameplay or even order food to be delivered.

I think Stadia is an exciting concept and should be paid close attention to by advanced and novice gamers alike. If it really works as well as has been promised, the world of gaming and content creating could be changed forever.
