Club Spotlight: The Junior High Beauty Club. What It’s Like, Who’s Inside, and More

Every Thursday after school, a group of junior high students come to room 2120 and practice their makeup skills. I’m proud to say I’ve started this beauty club.

Makeup is a talent and a passion for many. Unfortunately, many are scared to share their talent. I too, used to be that way. When you head onto Instagram and search #makeup, you see hundreds of thousands of beautiful makeup looks created by huge influencers you love (and some that you don’t) as well as smaller influencers that are just entering the sea of the controversial beauty community. As inspiring as it can be to see such amazing work, it’s also very intimidating and discouraging. Some people feel like they will be frowned upon, made fun of, bullied, and be compared to the people that have done makeup for years!

The Junior High Beauty Club is a safe space to create your best and worst makeup looks, without being judged. All of the people in the club are so incredibly talented but humble about it. You feel very welcome, you don’t feel you have to worry about being judged. Believe me when I say that I have walked out of there with my best makeup on, as well as my worst. They’ve seen it all. We all have.

Each week in the Google Classroom, we set a new theme for each meeting. We’ve done cherries (for National Cherry Pie day), dramatic, holiday, subtle, and even Disney! We’re also interested in hearing what YOU want to see. We’re very open to themes and there’s no limits (well, maybe some.) If you’re in grades 7-9 and have a passion for makeup (or are just getting started) email me (m.burjour@share.epsb.ca) and I can send you all the details for you to join. I hope you consider coming to check us out!
