AFL Assessment Code Changes

AFL Assessment Code Changes

To the confusion of many students, Victoria School has changed the codes it uses to assess students in AFL projects.

The new codes follow a four-grade system in contrast to the three-grade system used last year. EXE (Exemplary), PR (Proficient), AD (Adequate) and LI (Limited) replace CP, SP and EP.

According to an outline of the new assessment codes on SchoolZone, emphasis is placed on the ability for the student to transfer knowledge to new situations with varying degrees of help. Achieving an EXE means you are “able to transfer understanding independently in new situations” while a LI indicates that the “student requires support to develop and apply learning in highly structured situations.”

The reception to these changes are mixed, with some very delighted and happy to have codes that are easier to remember, and some that wish things could have remained the same. “Having four codes takes the simplicity away from the AFL, which is the entire motive of using a different assessment system for AFLs in the first place.”
