BHM Book Recommendation: Six Must-Reads by Black Female Authors

Legendborn - Tracy Deonn

Legendborn by Tracy Deonn is a young adult urban fantasy novel; the first in its series. It is a retelling of the Arthurian tale of the knights of the round table or King Arthur. Rather, it is more so a continuation of the classic story. And even if you don't know much about the original tale, the novel does an excellent job of giving you background information about it. The book follows Bree Mathews, a gifted sixteen year old girl who must navigate the secret society of people known as Legendborn after the unexpected passing of her mother.  

Tracy Deonn is a debut author who got the inspiration for the novel firstmost from the passing of her own mother. According to Deonn, “we often look for stories in loss”. Deonn will soon be releasing the sequel in the series, Bloodmarked.

Alexis Henderson is a writer of gothic fiction who loves to explore dark themes, witchcraft, and horror within her novels. She grew up in one of America's most haunted cities, Savannah, Georgia.

The people in her neighborhoods are disappearing rapidly as for sale signs begin to pop up everywhere. Our main character, Sydney Green works with her neighbor to uncover the truth of what's happening, but a deep dive into the history reveals paranoia and fear. Where have the people gone when gentrification has pushed them out? 

Alyssa Cole is the New York Times best selling and award winning author of historical, contemporary, and sci-fi romance.She contributed to publications including Bustle, Shondaland, The Toast, Vulture, RT book reviews, and etc. 





Lakewood - Megan Giddings

She was a finalist for a 2020 LA Times Book prize in the Ray Bradbury Prize for Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Speculative Fiction category.

“This Is How We Disappear” is a poetry collection and exploration of the disappearance of women, on both the physical and emotional level. And how these women, in turn, respond to it. The poems act as a conversation to tell the tales of survival and depict the small and large acts of resistance that are displayed. 

Titilope Sonuga is a Canadian award winning writer, poet, as well as performer. She was the first to perform a poem at a Nigerian Presidential inauguration in 2015, and is the recipient and finalist for many awards.
